The Perfect Pooch for Your Place

Lately I’ve been hearing lots of talk from friends about adoption. But adopting a dog in the city can be a challenge, especially if you don’t know what type of dog to get for the living space you have, and the amount of time you have to spend with your future life companion.

Apartment Pet Policies

If you already live in the city, you probably know about apartment pet fees. Most places have strict policies about what kind of pets you can’t have if at all, and the extra $$$ they tack on to your rent. But having a lovable friend to greet you and play with every day is soooo worth it :) If you’re deciding to adopt a pup while living in an apartment, you can either chalk up the ’pet rent’ money, give up the place, or convince your landlord your pup is trained enough to live there for free! Just have all your little guy’s paperwork, vet schedule, exercise routine, and maybe not peeing on the flower beds would be a good idea.

The Best Apartment Pups
Most great apartment dogs are small, but some large low energy dogs can live surprisingly well in small spaces. They just need low impact walks daily.
Here’s a list: Chihuahua, Dachshund, Pekingese, Miniature Pinscher, Pomeranian, Pug, Shih-Tzu, Schipperke, Boston Terrier, English Bulldog (although they don’t do well on stairs), Lhasa Apso, Maltese, Miniature Schnauzer, Scottish Terrier, Yorkshire Terrier, Poodle, and to debunk the myth…the Great Dane.

Some Breeds That Don’t Usually Do Well In Small Apartments
These breeds tend to be higher energy and small living spaces are not enough for them unless their owners run them daily. Here’s a list: Dalmations, Weimaraners, Border Collies, Siberian Huskies, hounds, retrievers, and setters.

Now that you have a little more info, happy searching to adopt a future friend-for-life!! Just remember, all pups need walks no matter what shape or size!
