Reporting Animal Cruelty? There’s An App For That

April is Prevention of Cruelty to Animals Awareness Month. The ARL recommends contacting your local or regional authorities immediately if you suspect animal cruelty, but what if you don’t know the phone number for the animal control department? Or what if you’re not sure who’s jurisdiction you’re under? Well, there’s an app for that. Two, actually.

The Animal Legal Defense Fund launched the LiveSafe app last fall. The app marks your audio, video, or text tip with a GPS location, then channels the info you reported to a call center where it is forwarded to the appropriate authorities.

In 2014, The Humane Society of The United States partnered with the National Sheriff’s Association on ICE Black Box, an app with similar functionality.

Hopefully, these apps and others like them will help to bring us one step closer to ending cruelty to animals. And of course, you can always call your local animal control officer or police non-emergency number. Remember: If you see something, say something.

Click HERE for instructions on how to use LiveSafe to report animal cruelty.

Adoptable Dog: Fargo Needs Your Help To Find A Home!

Our friend Terry over at Baypath Humane Society of Hopkinton alerted us to the plight of Fargo, a 4-year-old lab that has fallen on hard times this holiday season. From Fargo’s bio:

Bad luck has left Fargo homeless for the holidays.

Bad luck has left Fargo homeless for the holidays.

“Fargo is a sweet boy who has had a lot of instability in his life and truly needs an angel to give him a warm, loving, gentle home. Fargo’s owner died suddenly shortly after Fargo had gone through the loss of his owner’s mother, who he lived with. Fargo did not live with kids, however his aunt says he is friendly around older kids. Fargo lived with an older retriever, but has never lived with cats. He really enjoys squeaky toys. Fargo’s aunt wrote us that he “would make a wonderful dog in the right household.” Can you help this handsome boy?”

Please help us find a furever home for this sweet boy by sharing his story with your friends and family. For more info on Fargo, contact Baypath Humane Society at 508-435-6938 or shelter@baypathhumane.org.

Animal Mistreatment Incidents Abound – But There Is Hope

I’m sure we at Running The Pack were not alone in the shock and sadness we felt when we saw Friday’s story on the animals found in disturbing conditions at a shelter run by the City of Boston. This is just the latest in a string of animal mistreatment incidents that have made the news this summer: Pitbull puppies living in squalor in a Lawrence basement, a kennel worker’s assault on a dog in his care, a man leaving his dog in a locked car for hours while at a concert. The abuses keep coming in, each seemingly more horrifying than the last. But there is hope.

While it hurts to see animals in pain on the news, the fact that these stories are ON the news is important. It means that Massachusetts residents are recognizing the signs of animal cruelty and taking action by notifying the proper authorities. It means that those authorities are taking these reports seriously and tracking down and filing criminal charges against those responsible for the alleged mistreatment. It means that the mistreated animals are getting justice, as well as a chance at the life they deserve.

These stories send a message to potential animal abusers that their actions will not go unnoticed and unpunished. They also send a message of hope and encouragement to animal lovers – that their voice is a powerful tool in the fight to protect animals, that there is something they can do to help.

If you would like to help the Animal Rescue League of Boston care for the animals they have taken in from the Roslindale shelter under investigation, visit their donation page here.

Any (Pet Friendly) Port In A Storm

State lawmakers, animal aid organizations, and animal lovers will meet at the State House this afternoon to celebrate the passage of a bill that benefits pet owners all over The Commonwealth. Senate Bill 1172 An Act Ensuring The Safety Of People With Pets In Disasters was signed into law by Governor Deval Patrick back in March. As the title suggests, the bill will help pet owners keep their animals safe in the event of a disaster – But how? What changes will the average pet holder see in their lives?

Previous laws concerning the evacuation and rescue of people during a disaster did not cover the pets of the people being evacuated. Civil defense organizations in the state were not required to include animals in their disaster planning, so they didn’t have the necessary shelter or rescue equipment available to provide animal care. Even service animals were excluded. This left many people to make a heart-wrenching choice: To save their own life or to stay with their pet. Many people understandably chose not to evacuate without their pet, not only putting their life in danger, but the lives of the first responders sent to rescue them.

The passage of Senate Bill 1172 aims to prevent this scenario by amending the existing laws to include not only the needs of people during an emergency, but the needs of their household pets and service animals. A section of the new amendment reads:

“Any emergency plan of operations shall include strategies to support the needs of people with household pets and the needs of household pets under their care, including service animals. The local organization for civil defense shall take appropriate steps to educate the public regarding the resources available in the event of an emergency and the importance of emergency preparedness planning.”

Not only will civil defense organizations in Massachusetts be required to plan for rescuing pets along with their people, but they must have a plan for sheltering them as well.  Organizations have twelve months to update their emergency operations plans, but if you want to get a head start, the MSPCA website has a great checklist of how to keep your family – furry family included – safe during an emergency.

Things I love about running the pack? Scheduling and payment can take place on line. There’s flexibility so if we need to cancel a walk one day, it’s usually not a problem… Also, we get daily updates from the walker who gives us a quick run down of what they did on the walk (park, trails, etc) and whether or not our dog did her business.
